Barrowby's story
Barrowby will tell you, quite seriously, that he once judged jam at a country fair, tasting each spoonful with the gravity of a bear who takes preserves personally. His coat backs the claim: a deep cocoa-brown plush by Bukowski, dense and even, gone a shade paler and softer at the muzzle where a great deal of consideration seems to have gathered. His nose is a suede oval, matte and speckled, worn to a comfortable smoothness. Both foot-soles show that same tan suede, one flecked darker from sitting. His maker's tag reads clear at the seam, the belly label crisp. Washed and combed by hand, seams firm, he settles heavily and thoughtfully.
