Bering Lull's story
He maintains that he modeled for a museum diorama — belly down on painted ice, holding one pose through a whole winter of school tours — and simply never got the signal to stand up again. The evidence agrees: he lies flat and splayed, soft-filled and unjointed, plush pressed a little thinner along one shoulder where a head rested for years. His coat is snow-cream warmed to faint apricot across the cheek and flank, the way white plush ripens with light. Small black eyes, a cocoa velour nose rubbed smooth at the tip. Washed by hand, brushed out, every seam gone over.
