Dunnock Fray's story

Dunnock Fray keeps insisting he was the bear chosen for school satchels, not toy chests — proof offered in the single flattened crease behind his left ear, worn smooth from being gripped mid-dash to catch a bus. His fur holds that same hurried affection: thick and softly shaggy, deepest gold through the shoulders where small hands held on tightest. His nose, stitched in plain black thread, has gone slightly fuzzy at one edge from years of noses pressed close. The cream paw pads show faint fraying along their seams, evidence of games played hard and often. He's ready now for somewhere slower — a window seat, perhaps, instead of a backpack.
