Fenwick's story
Fenwick keeps up a modest fiction that he was a professional understudy — the spare bear kept ready backstage in case the leading teddy ever caught a cold. His honey-and-toffee GUND plush, dense and unbleached along the belly, supports the notion of a bear who waited politely in the wings and was fussed over often. Contrast pads of chocolate suede mark each paw and the soles of both broad feet, one deepened to near-espresso from resting on the same floorboard. His stitched black nose sits full and unfrayed, eyes clear and level. The red GUND tab still reads bright at his side seam. Washed and combed by hand, seams sound, he leans forward as if awaiting his cue.
