Blanchette's story
Blanchette maintains, without a trace of doubt, that she was spun from the foam left when the milk boils over — which is why her coat is that particular unbleached cream and her fur keeps its shaggy, whipped-up drift no matter how you smooth it. Her Russ Berrie tag, still legible with its Oakland item number and "MADE IN KOREA," fixes her plainly to the late 1980s. Her brown-stitched nose sits full and unfrayed, the dark bead eyes clear and centered. Both foot pads have gone a soft dove-taupe, worn from years of dangling off the edge of things. Hand-washed and combed out, seams sound throughout.
