Marcel

That Matrix Essentials label pegs him as a salon promotion of the late 1980s or early '90s — some thirty-odd years of keeping his shape.

Marcel's story

Every curl on him is original, and he would like that noted. The label in his side seam reads Schmidt-Cannon International, distributed by Matrix Essentials — a salon-supply house — so Marcel started his working life among shampoo bottles and rolling trays, and his coat has held its set ever since: nubbled ivory shag, warmed to pale wheat over the shoulders where years of light did their slow work. Made to mimic traditional artist or antique bears, Marcel has jointed arms and legs. Hand-washed and coaxed back into curl, seams sound throughout.
