Marlowe 's story
Ask Marlowe where he learned his patient sitting, and he'll tell you he apprenticed to a bakery scale, holding perfectly still so the flour could be weighed against him. His coat backs the tale: a shaggy oat-and-cream pile, marled with warm sand across his shoulders and paler where afternoons have lightened him. His muzzle is a soft chocolate-brown oval; a wide satin ribbon, dark as steeped tea, loops at his throat. Now in retirement, he sits comfortably in someone's arms, or on a bed, with pellets in his bottom and feet. Washed and combed through, seams firm.
